Frequently Asked Questions

Who will be organising and supervising SHC?

Sydney Horn Camp is organised and run by the Sydney Horn Camp Committee; a privately run group of expert music educators and performers. SHC is not a school or Department of Education event. The SHC committee is led by Director Sarah Morris, a passionate music educator of approximately 10 years, qualified with a Bachelor in Horn Performance and Music Studies (Hons) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Sarah is currently undertaking a PhD in Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, researching optimal training and teaching methods for wind instrumentalists.

If you have any questions regarding SHC, please contact the Camp Director, Sarah Morris at:

During Band Camp your child will be supervised by the SHC coordinators, our Camp Director, volunteer parents, music tutors, and teaching staff from the camp venue. Overnight supervision on Saturday night will be provided by a combination of teachers and volunteer parents. There will be a person with appropriate first aid training present at all times. All supervisors at the camp will either be teachers or will have a current Working with Children Check clearance. â€‹

What if my child is concerned about staying overnight?

All students are strongly encouraged to stay overnight at band camp. It is an enjoyable social occasion for the students. From previous experience, while some of the younger students may initially be apprehensive, they soon settle and are comfortable in the company of their friends. If you have any questions, concerns or issues about your child staying overnight please contact the camp coordinator who will treat your questions with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Do I need to be an advanced horn player?

No, Sydney Horn Camp welcomes horn players of all skill levels. Our program is tailored to cater to beginners, intermediate, and advanced players, offering appropriate challenges for each level.

What is the refund policy?

A non-refundable payment of $450 (or $240 for single day attendance) is required by the Friday the 29th of September. In the unfortunate and unlikely event that SHC is unable to proceed, all moneys received will be refunded in full. No refunds will be issues if your child is unable to attend due to sickness or otherwise.

Please refer to our detailed refund policy in the consent section of the registration form for more information.

How many rehearsals and tutorials are included?

SHC provides a minimium of 10 hours of intensive tutorials, 2 hours of mass ensemble rehearsal, 2 hours of workshops, and 2 hours of masterclasses across the two days of camp.

What should my child bring with them?

Please click here to download the camp packing list. Please ensure that your child arrives with their instrument, music stand, music, pencil, water bottle, towel, hand sanitiser etc separate to their main luggage. Music will be sent out to students approximately 1 week before the commencement of the camp. Students will go straight to rehearsals and sectionals and won’t access bedrooms until later Saturday afternoon. Please note school rules apply and there are to be no mobile phones or electronic games.

Do you need any parents helpers/supervisors?

Yes please!!! There is a section on the registration form where you can provide your details and availabilities to help. We definitely need parent volunteers to help out with transporting stands from Turramurra North Public School to the camp venue, volunteers to help supervise SHC students and make sure everyone is where they're supposed to be, volunteers to help with additional catering options, and volunteers to help with overnight supervision. More hands make light work! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Alternatively, if you're interested in helping out and don't want to complete the registration form, please send us an email with your availabilities and any requests you might have regarding the help you're willing to provide.

Please note that a current Working WIth Children Check (WWCC) is required for all volunteers/supervisors and can be obtained for free (volunteer role) at services nsw
